Prelude and Fugue in G Major

Barbara Holm

About this work:

Prelude and Fugue in G Major was commissioned by the Upper Midwest Flute Association, and it was premiered by the FluteSpiration Quartet at Flute Fest 2016 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The inspiration for this composition was the account of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well, as told in John’s Gospel. Thinking of the water Jesus gives us, and how it becomes in us, “a spring of water gushing up into eternal life” (John 4:14) is what I sought to evoke in the Prelude.  The Fugue is an exploration of how meeting Jesus can result in being led into new ideas and experiences.
