Paul Epstein, composer, pianist, teacher, conductor, and writer on music, has, for the last four decades, been active on almost all levels of the music world. He has written music for the Emerson Quartet, The National Symphony, the Stockholm Philharmonic, Yehudi Menuhin, orchestras of the Hartt School of Music, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Aspen Festival, as well as music for dance, television, schools, churches, and theater. He has written many of the CD booklet essays for the Emersons, including their Grammy-winning Shostakovich Quartets release, and their recent recording of Bach’s Art of the Fugue. He has played for singers both pop and classical, and has appeared not only in chamber ensembles, but in jazz and rock bands as well. He has long advocated a multi-disciplinary approach to playing, teaching, and listening to music. He studied with Elliott Carter and Luciano Berio at the Juilliard School, and multi-media at New York University. He is currently teaching at Stony Brook University.
