Robert Baksa was born in NYC in 1938. His family moved to Arizona when he was a child and lived in Tucson until his graduation from the University of Arizona with a BA in Composition. He returned to NYC where he worked as a music copyist until 1999 when he relocated to Kinderhook in Columbia County, NY. He has composed nearly 600 works in all forms with an emphasis on Chamber Music and Vocal works. Choral pieces published in the 1960s are still a regular part of the repertory as are his Art Songs on poems of Emily Dickinson which have been favorably compared to Aaron Copland well known settings. His one act opera “Red Carnations” commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Metropolitan Opera Studio has been performed more than 100 times for the general public and as an introduction to opera for young audiences. The work has been used as a touring opera by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s (which created the “Children’s Free Opera of New York” to showcase the work) and the Santa Fe and Dallas Operas. He has composed close to 100 pieces of Chamber Music which have been consistent sellers since their publication in the early 1970s. Some of his first efforts as a teenager were arranged for wind trio and still enjoy sales in the educational market as does his Aria for Flute written when he was 17. His Flute Sonata #1 was a winner in the National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition in the late 1980s and has been recorded several times. Correspondence from performers in Australia, Taiwan, Belgium and Canada attest to the wide ranging performances of his instrumental sonatas. Baksa has written a sonata for most all of the melody instruments except for the flute for which he has three as well as sonatas for flute with guitar, with harp and with harpsichord.
