Robert Dick is internationally recognized as a composer, performer and improvisor. The acknowledged master of the contemporary flute, he has revolutionized the soundworld of the instrument. His book, THE OTHER FLUTE: A Performance Manual of Contemporary Techniques, is used by composers and performers worldwide. Dick has performed solo recitals of his music throughout the Americas, Europe, Japan and Australia. His chamber music has been performed by the New York New Music Ensemble, Flute Force, V.I.F., the Boland-Dowdall Duo, the Scottish Flute Trio, New Winds, the A.D.D. Trio, Tambastics and other ensembles in the United States and Europe.
Professionally composing since 1973, he has earned wide recognition and is one of only two Americans ever to be awarded both Composers Fellowships (twice) and a Solo Recitalist Grant by the N.E.A. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and commissions from the Koussevitzky Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the Fromm Music Foundation, the Mary Flagler Cary Trust, the city of Zurich, the Philharmonie in Cologne and many more commissions, grants and fellowships.

"Startling Stories" (2007) for woodwind quintet, commissioned by Meet the Composer for Sylvan Winds (NYC), Sierra Winds (Las Vegas) and Vento Chiaro Boston)
"Gravity’s Ghost" (2007) for piccolo, commissioned by the National flute Association, USA, to be premiered at the NFA convention in August 2007 by Mary Kay Fink, piccoloist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and be the required new piece for the 2008 Piccolo Competition Piccolo Competition
"The Sound" (2005) for flutist/speaker, commissioned by the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College
"Babylonish Gabble" (2005) for solo flutist, commissioned by the Colorado Flute Society and the Brannen-Cooper Fund for Elizabeth McNutt
Primary performance projects currently are:
SOLO RECITALS of original compositions for flutes, selected from Dick’s thirty-five years of creating music – repertoire ranges from the now classic Afterlight, to the science fiction scenario of IF for amplified bass flute in F, to the performance art combination of poetry and acting with flute performance of everyone@universe.existence.
