Steve D. Matchett (b. 1957) has been an active musician in Houston, Texas for over 30 years. As a freelance tuba player he has performed with all of the city's professional orchestras and many leading brass ensembles and church organizations. His activities have also included conducting as well as clinician work. As a composer, he has written original music and arrangements for brass, winds, and strings. A few of his works, including Soundings, appear on the Prescribed Music List which is used for intermediate and high school level competitions in Texas and other states. A commissioned work, Introduction and Caprice for solo tuba, timpani and strings, was premiered at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in 1993. His Three Pieces for brass quartet and organ, was premiered during services at Kinsmen Lutheran Church in Houston. The Wind Quintet No. 1 was also premiered at Kinsmen on the Abendmusik concert series there. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Houston in tuba performance, and a Master of Music degree in music theory and composition from Sam Houston State University. While at SHSU he studied music composition and theory with Fisher Tull, music theory and analysis with James Marks, and musicology with Harry Mallard. His teachers at the University of Houston in music theory and analysis were Thomas Benjamin, Robert Nelson, and Linda Watson. As a musician and composer he has worked closely with the Scirocco Winds, Houston Lyric Brass, conductor William Kushner, hornist William Jones, and many others.
