Chamber Symphony No. 1 for Nine Winds

Douglas Townsend

About this work:
A four movement work, the second and third movements were first performed by the Village Civic Symphony on April 6, 1960 in the Auditorium of P.S. 41 on W. 11th St. in Manhattan. In comparing the piece to another on the program, Allen Hughes described the work as "more pungent, naturally, due to its scoring, and also more sophisticated in idiom and texture. Its counterpoint is unforced and effective, and faint nostalgia of the second movement contrasts nicely with the sprightly wit of the third." (NYTimes 4/7/60) In February of 1961, the Greenwich Village Symphony premiered the first and fourth movements of the piece in the same venue. (The Villager, 2/ /61) For woodwind quintet and brass quartet, this challenging piece is chromatic and dissonant, but not a twelve-tone work. Published by C.F. Peters; for sale or on rental from C.F.
