Rhythm Changes for violin and piano

Peter W. Knell

About this work:
Rhythm Changes was composed between September and November, 2002, although many of the musical ideas predate this period. As the title suggests, it riffs on the jazz tradition of composing pieces based on the chord progression (or "changes") from George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm". Unable to resist the musical pun, it also explores the idea of rhythm and the ways it can be altered and manipulated. It is dedicated to Duo Lirico--Peter Stein and Leopoldo Lipstein--who commissioned it and gave the first performance on January 11, 2003.
