Songs of Creation

Jay Vosk

About this work:
Songs of Cration was Commissioned by organist Marijime Thoene. Ms Thoene was interested in a work for Native American Flute and Organ on a Native American theme. I chose to base the piece on the Hohokam Creation Myth. The Hohokam were the indigenous people of Southern Arizona/Northern Mexico whose decendents are the Tohono O'odam, Yaqui and Pima tribes. The specific flute called for in the piece is Navaho-Ute in origin. This instrument (pitched in G minor) has a particularily haunting quality to it.Much of the musical material is based on Native American music of Arizona. The composition in 6 sections is played without pause. The moods of the work vary from 'Dark and mysterious' to 'Playful and joyful'. This piece has been recorded by organist Marijim Thoene and Kathleen Joyce-Grendel on the Raven label
