Sonata Bombastica

Gordon Beeferman

About this work:
Sonata Bombastica starts out much like a violin sonata might be expected to do. But though the basic sonata principle of developing a theme has a place here, it is not of much importance to me whether it is really a proper sonata or not. What is most important is the pieceĆs bombastic personality: this fierce, combative stance, from the very first bar, drives the piece further and further out in its own direction. The violin and piano throw thematic statements back and forth, and hurl each other into a series of virtuosic solo cadenzas and a ruthless development-type section. Knowingly or unknowingly, the Sonata takes itself so far out that it falls back in upon itself and recapitulates the opening theme; but it is so far gone by this point that this re-statement brings no kind of resolution. Instead, teetering on the brink, it charges ahead relentlessly, almost fatalistically, to its conclusion.
