About this work:
Tabacón (2003) is a small work for trombone quartet featuring a fanfare-like opening set against a form dominated by a dance. This dance consists of a punto-like melody and harmonic rhythm inspired by the sensational hot springs of Tabacón which lie in the shadow of Volcano Arenal in north central Costa Rica.
There is a great deal of dramatic trombone playing in the relatively short span of this work, and this character is influenced by the fantastic trombovirtuosity of the Trombones de Costa Rica and of their new American colleague ensemble who commissioned the work, The Continental Trombone Quartet.
