About this work:
Arenal (2003) is a small work for bassoon quartet. A fanfare-like opening is set against a form dominated by a dance consisting of a punto-like melody and harmonic rhythm inspired by the sensational hot springs of Tabacón which lie in the shadow of Volcano Arenal in north central Costa Rica.
There is a great deal of intricate bassoon playing in the relatively short span of this work, and this character is influenced by the fantastic virtuosity of the Trombones de Costa Rica.
