Akmal Parwez
About this work:
I. Moderato-Allegro
II. Andante-Doppio movimento
III. Adagio-Allegretto-Allegro estatico
The title 'Chitarang' is a composite of Sanskrit words 'Chitur' (Remembrace), 'Chitra' (Painting), 'Tarang' (Emotions) and 'Rang' (Color or Raag). In this work I've made use of 7 Raags and Raaginis which were favorites of my parents, and it is dedicated to their memory. It was composed at the request of David Jolley, who was joined by Paul Cohen (Sax), Brian Silver (Sitar) and Tapan Modak (Tabla) for the premiere at NYU's Lowe Theatre under my baton.
