String Quartet

Ernesto P. Pellegrini

About this work:
The work was originally composed in 1961 as part of the compositional requirements for the Masters Degree at The Julliard School of Music. It received some national attention that same year at the Rheta A. Sosland competition where it was awarded the only honorable mention after coming in second in the contest. The recent revision (2006) was very thorough and challenging. In order to maintain the fundamental premise of the work in terms of style and form, however, the original objective has been retained as much as possible. Conceived as a one-movement opus, the work is monothematic with the theme being presented at the outset of the work. As it progresses this theme becomes the source of the entire work. In this present edition the work is structured in an uninterrupted classical four-movement form: allegro, adagio, scherzo, and finale. Each section is connected by a brief or lengthy interlude containing material derived from the opening theme.
