Concerto for Orchestra - The Veil of Illusion
Stephen Paulus
About this work:
Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra and dedicated to its musical director, Sir Neville Marriner, who conducted the première performance in Minneapolis on April 6, 1983. The commission brought Paulus a welcome respite from the opera composer’s challenge of setting words and worrying that the musical thought consistently serves the text, mood and theatrical incident. In this sudden feeling of being “let out of the gates,” Paulus created a five movement work of exceptional energy and sense of controlled abandon, vigorous and optimistic in tone. The work comprises five movements:
1. (Bold and impetuous)
2.( With abandon)
3. (Tenderly and somewhat mournful)
4. (Lively and with buoyancy)
5.( Austere; explosive)
