The Fashionable Lady
John Craton
About this work:
The first ballad opera written by an American to be performed in London at the Theatre in Goodman's-Fields in 1730. Similar in style to John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, it enjoyed success at its premiere but was thereafter relegated to obscurity. With text by James Ralph, a friend of Benjamin Franklin, it utilizes popular song tunes of the era. The present work is a reconstruction of the original with free realization and a new overture by John Craton. See website for scores and additional information.
