Tamil Quartets

Barbara Benary

About this work:
An arrangement for string quartet of seven short hymns by the 14th century composer-saint Arunagiri, who lived in the Tiruvannamalai, in Tamilnadu, South India. These arrangements are related in various ways to a Form which I wrote called "How Many People Are In Your Quartet?" Some (but not all) of the movements are structured around possible combinations of four voices, four harmonic lines or four rhythmic placements in the measure, etc. Others explore the harmony suggested by the non-harmonic, linear melody of Raga.
