Aural Shoehorning

Barbara Benary

About this work:
The piece is about heterophony. The five movements explore various ways in which different tuning systems can meet and not meet: a mixed marriage in which neither partner is asked to convert. Diatonic instruments play with and against the Javanese gamelan, whose tuning is based on the loose conventions of traditional scale models called slendro and pelog, neither of which match our diatonic instruments more than occasionally.
