Piano Trio #2

Nicholas Underhill

About this work:
The Second Piano Trio was written for the Gramercy Trio. The piece has three movements, inspired by the grey landscapes of Lake Erie. The first movement "Icicle Shards" explores alternating textures and unique harmonies, emulating the exciting, frozen landscapes of Winter. The second movement, "Grey Vistas" has melancholy tunes set agains changing ostinati; it portrays the unrelenting, cold, colorless mood of deep winter. The Third Movement, "Dittery Doo", is a very lively resurrection suggesting Springtime. The vibrating rhtythms of the aboriginal instrument are a starting point for mixed meter dance textures.
