Turkey, Turkey

David Hahn

About this work:
Turkey, Turkey and Newt, Reagan, God with its instrumental Fanfare were composed for students at University Preparatory Academy in Seattle where I was Director of Instrumental Music in the mid-1990's. The idea behind the music on this disc was to educate and entertain students with little or no musical experience. The pieces were made by rhythmicizing parts of certain words. Turkey, Turkey has the choir repeat the title words in various syllable combinations over an ostinato. Newt, Reagan, God uses the phonemes of the title words ("Nih" - "Ooo" - "T" for "Newt" etc.) and combines them in different rhythms making a good exercise for beginning music students. The singers on the recording are University of Washington music students. Premiere: Students of University Preparatory Academy, Seattle, WA, 1996.
