Five Short Pieces for Piano

David Hahn

About this work:
These pieces are intended to augment the musical vocabulary of a player who is already a skilled pianist and is used to playing "the Classics." I have included elements of atonality, bi-tonality, serialism, minimalism and humorism(!) to introduce the player to some prominent compositional techniques which have been used in this rapidly vanishing century. The title of the fourth piece, "Talea," a word which means "a repeating rhythmic pattern," is taken from the terminology used by musicologists to describe the medieval iso-rhythmic motet. When performed together these pieces make a nice varied set for a recital.
