High Wood
Charles Ditto
About this work:
“High Wood” is inspired by the highly ornamental stylings of Iranian and Turkish ney music. The piece is in a 5-part arch-form rondo: ABCBA. The A section features an elaborated drone around D. The B section is based on a whole-tone complex supported by harmonies derived from the adjacent common-tone triads B major and C minor. The contrasting C section has a more chromatic quality and is punctuated with changing asymmetric meters emphasizing F#. “High Wood” was composed expressly for Ian Davidson, who is the performer here. High Wood was the winner of the NACUSA Composition Competition for 2007.
