Duo for Violas

Douglas Townsend

About this work:
Commissioned and world premiered by the Knickerbocker Chamber Players on March 14, 1957, at Town Hall in Manhattan. Joseph Glassman and Eugenie Dengel were the violists. The reviewer described the new work as "thoughtful and expressive." (NYTimes 3/15/57) "The Duo [for Violas] is a well-written, interesting piece of music which makes effective use of the warm timbres of the viola. The two last movements are particularly appealing." (Musical America, 4/57) Francis Perkins voiced the same sentiments in the NYHeraldTribune (3/15/57). Published by C.F. Peters. (Good review upon publication in the Music Library Assoc. Notes, 2nd Series, Vol. 17, No. 2 (Mar. 1960).)
