World premiered in Carnegie Hall on November 9, 1945 by pianist Ray Lev, who called the 22-yr-old Townsend "a wonderfully gifted young man." (The Worker, 10/21/45) The NYTimes reviewer found the four movement piece "full of youthful high spirits," and that it "did at least pass the elementary rule of making sense." (11/10/45) Ray Lev performed "Sonatina" again on March 31, 1946 at Times Hall, where It was broadcast live over WNYC. (NYTimes 4/1/46) It was most recently performed by pianist Miriam Brickman, a student of Ray Lev, on November 25, 2008, at the Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in Manhattan. (No review)
