timed curves

Ketty Nez

About this work:
Written in the summer of 2008 for my friend Daniele Ruggieri and his ensemble Ex Novo, "timed curves" explores ways to manipulate our perception of time in manners both calculatedly smooth (using exponential curves) as well as "hand made," with resulting grainy roughness. Inspired by my mixed Macedonian/Slovenian heritage, several folk songs from the Pirin region of Bulgaria emerge: from their melodic and rhythmic "personalities" the musical textures were derived, including highly melismatic ornamentation, use of modes, and shifting patterns of additive rhythms. Adding harmonic richness are spectral chords of stretched overtones, and controlled randomness in choice of rhythmic attack and interval size; these techniques are introduced using algorithmic processes I have developed over several recent compositions, by aid of IRCAM’s OpenMusic software.
