Stick Figures
Ian Dicke
About this work:
Stick figures are a visual form of anti cryptography, the science of conveying information without assuming any prior knowledge. They are most often found on warning labels for heavy machinery and on traffic signs. A good stick figure warning is immediately recognizable in its message, even if the viewer does not understand the language of the sign's text. The inspiration for this piece comes from these often humorous cautionary signs. To musically represent the visual traits of a stick figure, I employ an economic use of materials, continuous lines of counterpoint, and an austere sense of rhythm. This piece also features a strong emphasis on bouncing motives back and forth between the violoncello and double bass. I use these canonic sections to create a visual image of stick figures falling off an unstable ladder, getting burned by hot water or slipping on a treacherous wet floor (!).
