"A Carol v1" is a brief, concise setting of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem "Moonless darkness stands between" in a version employing a mildly chromatic but highly expressive harmonic language. The reference by Hopkins to Christmas at the end not only suggested the title but is also a key to understanding the meaning of the poem.
