John R. McGinn

About this work:
Performed by the composer at Old South Church in Boston in February 2008. This is a true hybrid between composition and improvisation: about 80% is written out (though even these draw heavily on MIDI-recorded improvs) while the remaining 20% is made up on the fly. My hope, of course, is that the 80/20 split will be a non-issue and that listeners will simply hear an experience that feels at once spontaneous and carefully structured.
