Fuse

Rob Smith

About this work:
Fuse may be defined as “to blend two or more substances by melting”. In the spirit of this definition, this work consists of three main elements – a triumphant fanfare-type opening, an insistent sixteenth note motive and a lyrical melody – that are mixed together until they become virtually inseparable. Fuse may also be defined as “a cord of readily combustible material that is lighted at one end to carry a flame along its length to detonate an explosive at the other end”, which is an image that fits the work’s fast, driving, and highly intense nature. Fuse was commissioned by CASE Arts Group Inc. and a consortium of the following ensembles: Baylor University Symphonic Band, Barry Kraus, conductor;Bowling Green State University Concert Band, Carol Hayward, conductor; Cypress Springs High School Panther Band, Russell Holcombe, conductor; Elkins High School Band, Scott Estes, conductor; Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Wind Ensemble, Stephen Crawford, conductor; Kansas State University Concert Band, Anthony Pursell, conductor; Kutztown University Wind Ensemble, Jeremy Justeson, conductor; The Kappa Kappa Psi Chapter of Northwestern State University Bands, Kevin Richardson, conductor; Palm Desert High School Wind Ensemble, N.
