Tre Ecloghe

Jay Anthony Gach

About this work:
I composed Tre Ecloghe per Flauto, Arpa e Viola (Three Eclogues for flute, harp and viola) while living in Rome, Italy holding the American Academy in Rome Music Composition Fellowship. It was first performed in New York, P.S.1 Sounds from the Left Bank 1988. In 2000 it was awarded in the Kathryn Thomas International Flute Composition Competition (UK). Each movement uses a fragment of a folk song as its melodic source. "Ecloga della Pastora" quotes a Tuscan folk tune heard in the opening flute solo. "Ecloga Aeoliana" quotes a varied version of a Peruvian folk song of the Andes region heard in the viola - measures 1-9; and Ecloga della Montagna also quotes a varied version of a folk tune gathered in the Pyrenees mountain region of Spain at rehearsal letter A heard in the flute. The pieces can be played individually or as a group.
