About this work: There are always surprises. The Eclems began life as "Seven Expansion-Contraction Linear Modulation Studies in Two Parts". I sent them to Thomas L. Read, who was interested in discussing theory, and he turned around and prepared them for performance, where the audiences found them lovely. Go figure.
