Littoral

Reynold Tharp

About this work:
Littoral draws its title from the constantly shifting zone of waves, rocks, and wind where water meets land. Across the span of the piece, melodic fragments and larger contours rise, float, and fall, recalling vistas, both sunlit and shrouded in fog, of the Pacific coastline and the ocean beyond as seen from the steeply falling hills below Mount Tamalpais north of San Francisco -- a vertiginous sensation of standing high above the edge of the world. Littoral was commissioned by pianist Ivan Ilíc in 2006 and is dedicated to him.
