About this work:
"Searchlight Songs" is dedicated to Janet McKay, who has been a friend and a joy to work with for nearly three years now. It was inspired by my memories of Janet's singing voice and her playing, and I grew interested
in the possibility of a piece that treated the combination of voice and flute as a single instrument, a starting point from which to progress. This version is the first stage in what will eventually be a work for flute and electronics.

Instrumentation notes: The piece requires that the flutist hum and whistle. Flutist should be able to sing either in an alto's mid range (for women) or sing in falsetto in that range (for men).
