saxophone quartet

Andrea La Rose

About this work:
I started my saxophone quartet in the Fall of 1997. It was my first really substantial work, and I never got to hear it until February 2003. I wasn’t able to find a sax quartet to play it until I started working with Anti-Social Music, a composer-performer collaborative. Nowadays, I rarely write a piece if I do not already have performers lined up to do it. At the time, I was more interested in writing in traditional forms than I am now. The first movement is sonata-esque, the second is song-like, and the third is a rondo. Although much has changed about my “sound” as a composer, there are certainly aspects to this quartet that I have retained as part of my palette. I like to use dissonance for its humorous qualities (I think they exist...) as much as for its angst, and I am still exploring ways to incorporate rock, funk, and hip-hop rhythms and gestures into my work.
