canon for four snare drums

Andrea La Rose

About this work:
The elementary band program I taught for involved group lessons. For one school's last concert, because they had such a large band, I had each lesson group perform a piece, too, usually out of their band method books. This particular group of budding percussionists were obviously getting sick of dealing with their books (although they hadn't really grown out of it, yet), and it was becoming quite the task to get them to focus. I threw this at them: one small piece that incorporated everything they had learned and required them to rely on their individual prowess instead of hoping that the stronger players would carry them through. It wasn't played perfectly, but we made it through without crashing and the effect was definitely there.
