Fantasy on "All the Pretty Little Horses" (for string orchestra or string quartet)

Douglas Townsend

About this work:
One of the three fantasies on folk songs comprising Townsend's "Suite No. 2 for Strings," which world premiered by the Garden State Chamber Orchestra, Frederick Storfer conducting, in the early 1980's in NJ. The piece can be performed with string orchestra or with string quartet. It has proven to be very popular with high school and youth orchestras (some have even recorded it), although it is not meant to be restricted to that level. It is reflective, introspective, somewhat mournful, and in the nature of a lament. Performed in Carnegie Hall on Feb. 7, 2003 by the Westbury High School Chamber Orchestra. Performed most recently in the U.S. by the Mother Lode Youth Symphony in Sonora, California, on May 1, 2011. It was most recently performed in Europe on December 13, 14, & 19, 2008, at the Kuenstlerhaus, Boswil, Switzerland, Moritz Baltzer conducting the Youth Orchestra of Freiamt (Switzerland) [Jugendorchester Freiamt] [JOF]. Published by Carl Fischer. Score can be viewed and mp3 audio can be heard at www.lucksmusic.net/cat-ed/ecat-ed.asp?Composer=Townsend.
