The visual artist Irving Kriesberg commissioned the work for his art film "Pastoral," which debuted in March of 1957. Howard Thompson called it "bold," "weird," "wonderful;" "a flickering flow of brazenly introspective animation as hypnotic as it is bizarre. Likewise the score by Douglas Townsend." (NYTimes 3/57) The music can be performed on its own without the film.
