Sonatina for Piano No. Two

Douglas Townsend

About this work:
This piece was performed by pianist Irene Rosenberg in a live broadcast premiere on WNYC almost immediately after it was written. In 1953 it was accepted for publication by the Hargail Music Press, a small publisher which specialized in contemporary American music. The publisher died without a successor before final publication, and the engraved work was returned to the composer. The work is in three movements. The first is in the form of a sonatina (by which is meant there are two distinct melodies which, after a short transition, are repeated). The second is a slow movement, a kind of song without words. The third and final movement (a difficult one) is a rondo which ends with a coda based on the first three or four notes of the last movement. SONATINA NO. 2 for piano had its live premiere 60 years after it was composed on November 5, 2010, at Columbia Teachers' College Milbank Memorial Chapel. It was performed by the Brazilian pianist, Rogerio Tutti. His performance may be viewed on video at www.youtube.com/douglastownsend.
