Suite No. One for String Orchestra (or String Quintet)

Douglas Townsend

About this work:
The string orchestra version was world premiered in December 1973 by Musica Aeterna at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, Frederic Waldman conducting. (NYTimes10/14/73) In July of 1980, Musical Heritage Review released an LP recording of this piece and three others, performed by the Garden State Chamber Orchestra, Fred Storfer, conducting. "The album is one that few listeners would fail to enjoy . . . witty, unpretentious, and candid." (Fanfare Jan-Feb 1981) The recording was re-released as a CD in 1990. This suite for strings has six movements, including two very lovely slow movements which stand very well on their own and are easy enough for a youth orchestra to perform (Adagio and Andante) . A college orchestra (the strings) should have no problem with any of the movements.
