Triatina for String Trio

Douglas Townsend

About this work:
This sonatina for string trio was commissioned and world premiered by the Garden State Chamber Orchestra at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Hackensack, NJ, on January 16, 1987. Frederick Storfer conducted. The reviewer wrote: "Only three and a half minutes in duration, Townsend's 'Triatina' is a suave piece of business that takes you at once into its confidence, shows off some finery with a few fancy turns, and then heads out the door before you can be sure whether what you saw was paste or diamonds. Townsend's wit is absolutely marvelous." (Star-Ledger 1/19/87) The piece was performed by the same group the next evening, January 17, 1987, at the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ. One reviewer called it "perfectly marvelous" (Echoes Sentinel 1/29/87); and another said that the three movement minitrio "was light and it was fun." (Time Out 2/4/87)
