testify

Andrea La Rose

About this work:
In Susan Mc Clary’s book, "Conventional Wisdom," she suggests that the use of virtuoso ornamentation in African-American styles of music is a way for the performer to “testify” for the audience: “He sings not just for himself but for his listeners, who perceive him as one who testifies for them all.” This passage did not directly inspire this piece, but it is appropriate to the nature of it. I was looking to write a virtuoso trombone piece, that wasn’t just flashy, but emotional and vocal.
Year composed: 2003
