Illusions / Illusiones

About this work:
Commissioned by the Utah Opera, this opera was co-written with teenagers, and is the story of a young Latino who is suspected of joining a gang. As he searches for an escape from an increasingly complicated life, he reaches out to his grandfather, and finds solace in the love of his family, and finally support from his girlfriend.
The music is tonal, culturally specific, and the score has optional places for guitar accompaniment. It was designed to be sung by professional singers, and has toured throughout Utah with the opera company's quartet of resident young artists.
