Townsend's first work for orchestra, this piece world premiered at Manhattan's Town Hall, on February 19, 1951, by the Little Orchestra Society, Thomas Scherman conducting. (NYTimes 2/18/51) Ross Parmenter wrote that the work "had an underlying surge and a feeling for orchestral sonorities which indicate a talent that is likely to be heard from again." (NYTimes, 2/20/51) Virgil Thomson wrote: "The work itself, songful, sincere and with ambitions toward intensity, is neo-Romantic in inspiration. . . ." He expressed "a wish for acquaintance with more and later works from the same composer. There is talent and possibly distinction in him." (NYHerald Tribune 2/20/51)
