Sonate Francaise (The Unwritten Chapters)
Dalit Warshaw
About this work:
The title of this work refers to Irene Nevirovsky’s unfinished epic novel, Suite Francaise, which examines the mass emigration from Paris preceding the Nazi occupation (that she herself experienced, as a well-known Jewish-Russian author living in Paris) from the standpoints of vracharacters representing a cross-section of French society. Nemirovsky, forced into hiding, was sent to Auschwitz (where she met her death) in 1942 before she could write the last three volumes of her novel. As a composer reading an author’s unrealized creative plans, I felt obligated to continue where Nemirovsky had left off, and to complete “the unwritten chapters.”
