Mass in Miniature

Douglas Townsend

About this work:
MASS IN MINIATURE (2007) is a serious choral work for women's voices and piano. It is in three contrasting movements: the traditional Kyrie, the Gloria, and the Agnus Dei. The Kyrie is a brief contrapuntal movement which sounds like a fugue, but which technically is not a fugue. The Gloria is a short and joyful fugue. The Agnus Dei begins with a kind of lament, and closes with a brief prayer for peace. There is a short prelude and postlude for piano. Traditional Latin text. This version of the MASS IN MINIATURE, for two sopranos and piano, premiered on November 5, 2010, at Columbia Teachers' College Milbank Memorial Chapel. It was performed by American sopranos Felicity Graham and Emilie Storrs, with piano accompaniment by Brazilian pianist Rogerio Tutti. A video of an earlier studio performance by Felicity Graham and Marianne Ciasulli, accompanied by pianist Laura Ravotti, can be seen at www.youtube.com/douglastownsend. (See also the choral version, utilizing a two-part women's chorus and piano.)
