Sonata for Guitar (3 mvts)

Matthew Baier

About this work:
Sonata for Guitar (1981) The melodic and harmonic structure of this work is atonal in the manner of the twelve - tone or serial technique that was pioneered by Arnold Schoenberg (1874 -1951). In this method the 12 tones of the chromatic scale are arranged in a fixed order (tone-row). This series is then set within a system, which allows for forty-eight variants of the original series or row, providing a means for motivic construction and unification within the musical work. This system was then incorporated into the sonata form of the classical era containing the prescribed sections of exposition, development and recapitulation thereby adding another layer of continuity by which the 12-tone composition could be rationally appreciated by the listener.
