Pause = Pause

About this work:

Pause = Pause (2008)

Eric Huebner - Piano

I. Prelude and Scrawl

II. Thug Dance

III. Inexactetude

I’ve always been intrigued by the punctuation of music, poetry or everyday events such as sports. I enjoy stanzas, double bars and pauses between innings. Ultimately, the pauses in this piece are none of these but just pauses, hence the title.

Prelude and Scrawl is several things at once. I tend to draw when I write and my scribbles can be very sloppy; sometimes I can’t even read them. However, the scribble here is very precise. The pedal is not used and the hands seldom play simultaneously. There is a prelude in this movement, but it is only revealed at the end.

As for Thug Dance, I imagined a line dance of malignant Dick Cheneys in dark suits and fedoras - thick, clomping and evil.

Inexactetude recalls the precision of the first movement. It is exact in its inexactness; a progression of tempo changes creates a continuous lurch.
