Play Us a Tune

Douglas Ovens

About this work:
Commissioned by the Asheville (NC) Symphony, Play Us a Tune was written between October, 1985 and August, 1986. It is a single-movement work, with voice, in six large sections that mirror divisions in the text. Louder, dramatic sections are separated by quieter ones in 3/8 meter. Embedded in the orchestra and suggested to me by the text is a choir of "ringing" instruments: vibraphone, chimes, crotales, harp and piano. Text by Thomas Wolfe. Play Us a Tune is recorded on Vienna Modern Masters VMM3009.
