About this work:
Pas de Deux is a tri-parte construction. The first is a plaintive, contrapuntal quasi-improvisation in the manner of reed organ drone music—a passage devoid of time. The second part is characterized by lively, contrasting, highly rhythmic material, á las palmas, as accompaniment for an almost bawdy exchange of riffs. An important melodic device, here, is an interval wedge created by juxtaposing an F# major pentatonic scale with a D# chromatic scale: m3 – M3 – P4 – P5 – m6, up and down. This cell then becomes the basis for the hymn-like theme of the closing passage. This is a live performance from 2010: Ian Davidson, oboe and David Pino, clarinet
