About this work:
This synthesizer work was first created in the home studio and in the IUSB Electronic Music Center during a 6-week period in the winter of 1974-5. Since IUSB had been forced to return the powerful Synthi 100 synthesizer in exchange for just the digital sequencer portion of the instrument, I was left with mostly my own synthesizers to work with. These consisted of an Arp 2000, several Wavemaker modules, and, most importantly for this work, especially in the pattern sequencing, an Electrocomp 100. The Synthi 100 sequencer also came into play doing the more extensive melodic patterns. Basically, it is the result of one continuous "patch". At times the patch is leading melodically, at other time accompanimental. This appeared in its initial form on an Orion LP (ORS 75192) in 1975, along with my "Genesis" and "Dimensions II." It was extensively revised in 1980 in Texas, and produced in that year on Folkways LP "Electronic Music from the Outside In." In the revisions, I superimposed several more quotes from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" than were originally there. This is the latest, revised version.
Stereo tape. Dur. 9:10. Recorded on Folkways/Smithsonian and available as a CD one-off (Folkways FXM 36050 LP). Recorded on an earlier and not-so-hot version on Orion (Orion ORS 75192 LP). Original version recorded in South Bend, Ind. home studio using ARP 2600, Electrocomp 101, Synthi AKS. Reverb is a custom one made by KB Electronics (Terry Kincaid). It’s kind of boomy.
