Quiet Moments

Kevin McCarter

About this work:

The three compact movements comprising Quiet Moments weave lyrical lines from melodic kernels that are freely varied and combined.  The viola opens the first movement as a solo voice, later joined by the piano, which adds new dimensions of harmony, texture, and rhythm patterns that are never quick but rich in variety and detail.  In the second movement, the piano is heard first, with the viola soon joining in a flowing line that builds in intensity.  Near the end, the piano recalls its opening figure in longer notes.  The third movement features a steady, quiet piano accompaniment to a viola melody that unfolds through a series of short figures and brief, rhythmic moments of silence.
